Sometimes those are future events and other times it is a message from God about right here and now. In this case the day of the Lord is a dreadful thing to be feared for those who were unrepentant. All of the kings of Judah were direct descendants in the line of David, which was of particular significance because it was believed that some day the Messiah would come from this line and that under the Messiah's leadership the full realization of the divine purpose in the history of the Hebrew people would be realized. As a love poem, the Song of Solomon resembles love poetry as it has always existed. Its intent is to remind Israelites of what God has given them and what he expects from them.

The people still have much to do to get their priorities in line. Job wishes for someone who can mediate between himself and God, or for God to send him to Sheol, the deep place of the dead. However, an effort is made to collect the proverbs into a topical arrangement as the class progresses PDF file size: k. Those who had emerged from bondage in Egypt were then united with other tribes that had not been involved in the Egyptian oppression, and together they formed the nucleus from which the Hebrew state came into existence. Recent investigations merely indicate that the Pentateuch literature is even more complex and requires a larger number of documents to account for all the materials found in these books. Likewise, after the fall of the Assyrian empire, they were subservient first to the Egyptians and later to the Babylonians.

ZEPHANIAH written by Zephaniah Offers a prophecy regarding the overthrow of Judah and the surrounding nations for their idolatry and wickedness — but notes that they will be restored with peace and justice. The people still have much to do to get their priorities in line. In order to extend the power and influence of Israel among surrounding nations, Solomon contracted a number of foreign marriages. There is victory and defeat. They are the divine model, and in places the sinful antitheses, for the new creation, which begins with us James ; 2 Corinthians

Outline of the Old Testament book

The narrative subtype that dominates is hero story. Poems were written in commemoration of significant events. A love poem is a love poem, and we should abandon ourselves to the poems in this "best of the best" collection which is the implication of the title—"the song of songs".

The main literary principle at work is that literature uses particulars to embody universals; we look not only at the details of the text but through them to principles that apply today.

The people still have much to do to get their priorities in line. It shows that God is interested in the hearts of all people, everywhere.

The first twelve chapters are narrative, in the specific genres of military conquest story and epic the story of a nation at a critical point of its history. They think his questions are crafty and lack an appropriate fear of God, and they use many analogies and metaphors to stress their ongoing point that nothing good comes of wickedness.

The survival of the Hebrews' religion was due in no small measure to the work of the two great prophets of the exile, Ezekiel and Deutero-Isaiah, who provided an interpretation of the captivity that accorded with their understanding of the nature of Yahweh.

With this assumption, they write for the specific purpose of pointing out the divine element as they see it illustrated in the historical process.

His plans for the building of the Temple were carried out after his son Solomon ascended the throne. In some respects, Saul was an able ruler and a competent warrior who spent much of his time battling the Philistines. To many, it must have appeared that the gods of Babylon had triumphed over the god of the Hebrews.

Several charts and maps included color cover; PDF file size: k. Joshua The book follows a common biblical pattern known as mixed-genre format which literary scholars also call encyclopedic form.

Three distinctly different genres appear—narrative andlawgivingand architectural information about the building of the tabernacle and If Yahweh still retained his power, he must have forsaken his people, for they were now subject to a foreign government.

The book resembles a personal journal, consisting of passages of reflection, recollection of past experiences, and mood pieces. The main genre is poetic drama. The Divided Kingdom, Part 4 File size: 4. The southern kingdom continued until B. Both books were produced during the eighth century B.

Its intent is to remind Israelites of what God has given them and what he expects from them. Ezekiel is in Babylonia trying to get the newly exiled Israelites to finally get their hearts right.

Outline of Genesis

The overall story is the difficult life of a godly man who is forced to endure hard times. Since these poems are built around a single courtship and marriage, they have the quality of an epithalamion marriage poem. When Rehoboam replied that he would not only continue these policies but would be even more severe, ten of the tribes revolted and set up a new government of their own.

Later, all of the laws were placed in a historical framework and, along with the early poems and narratives, were incorporated in the lengthy historical documents that constitute a relatively late but significant portion of the literature of the Old Testament.

God is good in spite of our misunderstanding. Later, the tribes' fortunes changed as they were able to regain most of what they had previously lost. Thematically, this book is the only book in the Bible that is a full-fledged theodicy—a reconciliation of God's goodness and omnipotence with the fact of evil and suffering in the world the problem of evil, as philosophers call it.

The message of Haggai is to keep first things first. The motif of covenant renewal dominates; subordinate ideas are that obedience brings blessing while disobedience brings a curse.

The story is the most complete example in the Bible of a love story, and the genre of hero story likewise governs the book. We do know that new laws were added from time to time as the need for them arose. And yet there is one major theme that flows consistently throughout its pages.

Do you know what that theme is? And what significance does each book have as it relates to the whole? What major ideas are contained within each?

The manual is meant to be practical; thus, a short section is given on how to study the Bible as well as how to pass the information on to others by way of preaching or teaching. Daniel B. Wallace.
